Iraq War

Ohio (Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young) and Magrino

Lyrics
Tin soldiers and Nixon's comin'.
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drummin'.
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it.
Soldiers are gunning us down.
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her and
Found her dead on the ground?
How can you run when you know?

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na.
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na.
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na.
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na.

Gotta get down to it.
Soldiers are cutting us down.
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her and
Found her dead on the ground?
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon's comin'.
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drummin'.
Four dead in Ohio.
Four dead in Ohio.
Four dead in
Ohio

The song Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young was written in response to the Kent State shootings. The National Guard was sent by President Nixon to Kent State to quell protesters of the draft. Four people were killed by the National Guard.  This song criticizes Nixon’s actions in response to the protests. In addition to that it also is criticizing the draft and the invasion of Cambodia as that was what the students were protesting. This song looks at the affects of war on society; firstly it looks at how protests can affect a war (change in voting legislation). It also examines the costs of war on society in that Nixon made rash decisions in trying to contain these protests. I agree that the situation was handled poorly by the government; I don’t think that the National Guard should have been sent in to quell protesters, and even if they are sent in they should be using crowd-control items not rifles.
