Iraq War

October 7th, 2004: The Duelfer Report

The Duelfer Report was the final report given on Oct 7th, 2004, by a group sent from the United Nations with the objective to find the truth on whether or not Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and Saddam Hussein. This group was made up of a group of United Nation solders that were stationed in Iraq; they were called The Iraqi Survey Group also known as the ISG. In this report it talks about how there was no evidence that there were any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq during this time. This may be because Iraq ended its nuclear program in 1991 and the Iraqi Survey Group found no evidence that Hussein restarted the program in the years leading up to his loss of power on April 9th, 2003. Iraq also destroyed it’s chemical weapon stockpile in 1991 and all the ISG found were a few old and abandoned chemical munitions. There was also no evidence that this program was started again.  In addition they found that Hussein ended his biological warfare development in 1995; still there was no evidence that this program had been restarted. Though, Saddam Hussein did make it clear that he did believe in having different types of weapons such as nuclear bombs. Hussein did want to restart these programs after the United Nation’s sanctions were removed and the Iraqi economy was stabilized. Had he been in power when this happened there is a good chance that he would have started these programs again and possibly made a real weapon of mass destruction.
